Granite countertops have been popular for ages, as they offer a beautiful, sophisticated appearance for kitchens and bathrooms. They are also unique, durable, and surprisingly affordable for a material of premium quality.

However, despite granite’s long reign as a leading countertop material, there are a lot of misconceptions about it. Here are three myths about granite countertops that you should not believe:

  1. Granite is extremely high maintenance. Some people may have gotten the idea that granite countertops are high maintenance because they need to be sealed and resealed periodically. However, resealing only takes a few minutes and only needs to be done once every 12 to 18 months. In reality, granite countertops don’t require much more maintenance than other types of countertops. Wiping down the counters with gentle cleaners and resealing them regularly should be enough to keep them in excellent shape.
  2. Granite is no longer in style. One myth that seems to be circulating recently is that people are ditching granite countertops in favor of quartz. But while it’s true that quartz is a popular countertop material, granite is still a luxury statement and a popular choice for many homeowners. In fact, granite and other natural stone countertop sales are projected to increase in the next few years.
  3. Granite is unsafe because It emits radon. Some fear granite countertops emit radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas known to cause lung cancer. However, this is a misrepresentation of the truth. Granite can contain miniscule levels of radioactive elements, but there isn’t reputable evidence that it will cause any real harm.
