Whenever you watch a home improvement show, you’ll quickly notice a theme between individuals who are looking for a home or remodeling one: most everyone wants hardwood floors! With hardwood floors, you are able to create a warm, comfortable feeling in your space without changing much else. Hardwood floors are comfortable, beautiful, and when properly cared for, durable. If you have new hardwood floors or new-to-you hardwood floors, here are a few ways that you can care for your hardwood floors so they last many decades into the future.

One of the first things that you’ll want to do for your hardwood floors is protect them where they are likely to see the most damage. This involves laying down rugs in the hallways, inside and outside of entry doors, and under furniture and seating areas.  Rugs in high-traffic areas are much easier to clean or replace than a section of hardwood flooring.

Another thing you’ll want to do is carefully clean and maintain your hardwood flooring, which depends on what type of protective coating you have. The majority of hardwood floorings use wax or polyurethane coatings to protect the wood, so determine which coating you have and clean accordingly, using wax cleaners for wax floors and polyurethane-approved cleaners for your poly-covered flooring.

Finally, don’t be afraid of scratches. Even the hardest of hardwood floors will get a few nicks and scratches here and there! Scratched floors are not the end of the world. In fact, they can actually give your hardwood floors a little bit of character. If they bother you, there’s a number of scratch-filling products you can use to camouflage the issue.
